Ok, Here’s the Situation

I was once told to never make excuses as to why you haven’t been as consistent in writing as you should be, that no one cares why you have been lazy but I feel I owe you guys an explanation.
Funny story, you’re gonna love this.  Apparently my meds haven’t been working for awhile and the odd thing about being diagnosed with depression is not only do you not feel like doing anything (like writing), you also question everything you write and doubt it’s value (it sucks, I suck, you suck, neither of us know if something sucks so why bother. Etc. Etc. Etc.)
Well I got some new meds and now I have all these ideas and a new sense of motivation so please don’t give up on me and I will post more words and even some moving pictures very soon.

New website! 2015 Tickets on sale now!

Puzzling to explain, nigh impossible to describe, but absolutely delightful to experience, The Edwardian Ball is an elegant and whimsical celebration of art, music, theatre, fashion, technology, circus, and the beloved creations of the late, great author and illustrator Edward Gorey. This year's featured Gorey tale is The Beastly Baby, "A calmly horrific tale about a most unpleasant infant everyone is trying to get rid of..."

We are thrilled to combine the announcement of our 2015 San Francisco events - January 16th and 17th at the beautiful, historic Regency Ballroom - with the launch of our new website, please have a look around, pick up your tickets, and let us know if you have any questions - it's always a pleasure to hear from you. Take me to edwardianball.com!

F.Y.I.

On Sunday October 5th my dad died.  I apologize for the lack of articles but I seem to be having problems getting over it.  The funny thing about depression isn’t that you’re sad or having dark thoughts, it’s the lack of motivation to do anything and the self-doubt.  I promise I will return soon, I’m hoping for the first week of November.

My Reptilian Sex Brothers

Last week, Russia had some bad news for fans of the five geckos it had sent into space to, essentially, have zero-gravity sex for Russian scientists to watch.  Nobody was a bigger fan of those geckos than John Oliver, and on Sunday night's Last Week Tonight, Oliver said goodbye to the little lizards.  There are kind words, five candles, a couple of 40s, and a band — A Great Big World — singing a mournful ballad, with Oliver showing off a surprisingly good singing voice.  It wasn't Joan Rivers' star-studded funeral, also on Sunday, but it's probably the best sendoff any lizards could hope for — and many humans, too. So, #GoodbyeGeckos. Do svidaniya.

I was so moved by this tribute I fired up the design software and made the below mission patch in their honor, which I have sent to Mr. Oliver in the hope he knows how much these “Interstellar Orgy Mobile” passengers have touched my life as well.  Hopefully if you click on it you will be taken to the full size image.

On a sidenote…

Pacific Rim is the most awesome film I have seen this year.  Don’t let anyone tell you different.  Del Toro has made an excellent Kaiju movie and should be proud.  You made this old man happy to spend $12 to see it on a big screen.

3 quick thoughts

Got home and I am working on the It Came From IFC for tomorrow but wanted to throw out three quick things on my mind.

1.  Go here now and read a great article about horror movie casting by BJ-C at Day of The Women.  No one has a better understanding of how to make an effective horror movie than she, plus I kind of idolize her.

2.  If you’re going to remake Texas Chainsaw Massacre could you try to actually watch the original?  Leatherface was not the only “villain” in the original and some of the scenes that don’t focus on him are the ones I remember more, for example The Dinner Scene.

3.  Why is it when we have a character listening to music in any of the Star Trek series it is always classical or big band or jazz or show tunes?  You telling me there is no rock or metal in the 24th century?  Ensign Redshirt doesn’t get off his duty shift and relax with a little Slayer?  Dr. Phlox doesn’t jam out with Hank Williams Sr.?  Unless you count J.J. Abrams trying to convince me Kid Rock will still be around in the late 23rd century but I doubt anyone will remember his name 20 years from now.

Unforeseen Delays

As I write this I am sitting in an airport in Eastern Europe awaiting the next string of flight delays.  I had hoped to have been back to the states days ago but due to inclement weather or werewolves on the runway or whatever, it did not turn out so much to my chagrin.  I will do my best to be back at the HQ sometime in the next few days and we will be back to daily posts starting this coming Monday the 7th.

Sorry for the delays in posts but I guess it was beyond my underlings to write something in my absence.

Quick note

Just wanted to let you know that I had scheduled tonight’s WTF Wednesday to feature “Southland Tales” but after six years of doing this thing we have come across a film that is beyond redemption.  I couldn’t get past the 20 minute mark.  Please do not watch this film.  For the sake of the children and all future children just pretend this movie never existed.  If you are a sadist and/or a masochist then I offer up once again a man I hold in high regard, Linkara at Atop the Forth Wall.  His review will explain everything.

Atop the Forth Wall: Southland Tales

I will be back later tonight with an alternative title.
